The self-induced electromotive force (emf) in a circuit is directly proportional to the time rate of change of the current (dI/dt) multiplied by a constant (L). This constant is called the inductance, or more precisely, the self-inductance, and is determined by the geometry of the circuit or, more commonly, by the geometry of individual circuit elements.

A solenoid is a type of electromagnet whose purpose is to generate a controlled magnetic field. If the purpose of the solenoid is instead to impede changes in the electric current, a solenoid can be more specifically classified as an inductor rather than an electromagnet.

In electromagnetism and electronics, inductance is the property of an electrical conductor by which a change in electric current through it induces an electromotive force in the conductor. It is more accurately called self-inductance. The symbol (L) for inductance was chosen to honor Heinrich Lenz (1804–1865), whose pioneering work in electromagnetic induction was instrumental in the development of the final theory.

Equation:

L = µ₀ * N² * A/l

where:
N - is the number of turns
I - is the length
A - is the area of the cross-section
µ₀ - is the vacuum permeability, approximately 1.25664 * 10^-6 T*m/A
